Fun action RPG Whiflash added to the 8bitrocket Retro Arcade Showcase
Whiflash has been added to the 8bitrocket Retro Arcade Showcase. Whiflash is a nice combination of traditional console / computer action rpg combined with s few new, very unique elements.
In the developer's own words (Lauri Hosio):
Description: In Whiflash you play as a golem who joins the Stone Guard to defend his country. Your first mission is to get the POWER CRYSTALS from the caves below the Stone Fort. Your weapon of choice is the flail which is attached to your mouse. Whiflash is a Action RPG/Adventure game.
Rating: Teen
Control:
Move: WASD or Arrow keys Attack: Move the mouse quickly around like a flail Power-ups: 1, 2, 3 and 4 keys - Press again to de-activate Use potion: Q, E, 0 OR eat one in the Inventory Inventory(pause): Space, I, P, C
8bitrocket take:
Whiflash is a fun, well made action RPG very similar to a number of classic games, but also unique unto itself. The whipping action of the main weapon certainly makes for some unique game action. The game play starts out with the retro. time honored task of killing a rat, but soon moves to battles and quests that are more involved and detailed. What it might lack in a little visual and sonic polish here and there, it makes up for by being a detailed and involved rpg.

Classic Bomb Blitz added to the 8bitrocket Retro Arcade Showcase
Bomb Blitz is based on an a classic Vic 20 game called Blitz 16 combined with Canyon Bomber (VCS 2600) and the classic keep the helicopter in the air Flash Game.
In developer Mitomane's words:

You control an airplane flying over a city. Drop the bomb to destroy city buildings, you can drop one bomb at time. Avoid enemy airplanes patrolling the sky. Bonus point for destroying planes or killing men at work. CONTROL KEYS: SPACE BAR to control plane. X to drop a bomb.
8bitrocket take: Bomb Blitz has a distinctively great retro feel. The game is a fun, but difficult mix of a few different retro titles, especially Canyon Bomber and of course the Vic 20 game it is based on. It contains a very nice set of retro pixel art and simple sounds 8bit sounds and some great particle effects.

The high-score system is linked to arcadebomb's system. There are many subtle details in game play.
8bitrocket take: A very well done Bomberman style game. The graphics look very much like an ST or Amiga 16-bit game circa 1989. The pickup and toss bombs ability really ads something new and improved to this genre.
8bitrocket.com Launches Retro Flash Game Hall Of Fame
8bitrocket.com Launches Retro Flash Game Hall Of Fame
Today we launch our newest feature: The 8bitrocket.com The Retro Flash Game Hall Of Fame. We here at 8bitrocket.com love to find and play great retro-inspired Flash games. As we build-out our "Next Generation Retro Game Portal" we wanted to make sure that we did not leave any great games under the pile as we add new games to the site. Because of this, we decided to create a "Hall Of Fame" to highlight the best games in this genre. We start today by
inducting 5 games into the Hall Of Fame. These are 5 Games that we feel are the best examples of
retro
inspired games made in Flash.
Of course, there are many others games that are good enough for this list, and many of them will make it into the hall of fame in due time. However we cannot induct every game. That is why we have created the "Retro Stars" award. Any game that makes it onto our site is instantly a "Retro Star". The designation means that we have chosen the game out of piles and piles of games that come across our desks, as one of the best retro inspired games that currently exists in the realm of viral Flash games.
So without further ado, and in no certain order, here are five inaugural inductees into the 8bitrocket.com Retro Flash Game Hall Of Fame:
Magma : Magma is an exceptional Bomberman inspired game from Red Rooster Games. While this is a very nicely made game with crisp visual and solid game-play, we have inducted it into out Hall Of Fame for this reason: It gets more plays than any other game on our portal! For this reason alone it deserves it's place in our pantheon of greats.
Sky Patrol is an amazingly fun action shooter by the Edis Brothers who run ezone.com . These guys make tons of great games, but in our opinion, this is one of the best. The game is a 16-bit graphical era take on Konami's Time Pilot. The controls are smooth, the explosions are satisfying, and the game play is awesomely addictive. Plus, since Time Pilot
is one of our all-time favorite games, this one was a shoe-in.
Gamma Bros. from Pixel Jam is one of the finest examples of 8-bit pixel design used to create a compelling and deep game experience. The unique game play involves controlling both Gamma Bros. ships at the same time, while using two sets on controls: WASD to fire and the <- arrow keys-> to move. This game simply screams for an arcade cabinet with dual Robotron joysticks (we can only dream). The graphics are very Minter-esque with a bit of Atari 8-bit Synapse (Fort Apocalypse, Zepplin) thrown-in for good measure. In all honestly, we at 8bitrocket.com bow to the pixelated majesty of Pixel Jam's creation. To us, they represent the top of the heap in pixel
art game design.
Abominaball from Photon Storm is a fantastic
re-creation of an Atari ST Public Domain classic. Photon Storm has emerged (in
one year) are a premier developer of retro and modern Flash games. This retro
classic puzzler with modern clean graphics, top notch level design, and
wonderfully designed interface will have you gaming well into the night to
figure out the key to all 50 levels. You can even put in the "8bitrocket" level
start code for an ST/AMIGA demo style visual treat. Flattering will get you some
where in the 8bitrocket arcade!
Law Of The West Pinball from Gaming Your Way
is of of the best examples of late 80's, early 90's video pinball ever put
into Flash form. It doesn't hurt that we are Old West-ophiles here at
8bitrocket, having been brought up on a steady diet of Clint Eastwood in our
youth. That, combined with our fascination with video pinball in the 90's
(before there was anything else retro to play) makes it a perfect game for our
first five inductees. This title features pinball action on a vertically and
horizontally scrolling playfield which allows the table and ball size to look
realistic and play just like a real table.
That's it for the first set of Hall of Fame inductees. Please email us at
info[at]8bitrocket[dot]com if you have a game that you would like considered for
the Arcade (Retro Star
award) and maybe for a Hall of Fame award in the future.
Well crafted Law Of The West Pinball added to the 8bitrocket Retro Arcade
The particularly well crafted retro pinball game, Law of the West, has been added to the 8bitrocket Retro Arcade. This game was created by the artisan professionals at Gamingyourway.com in the tradition of 70's and 80's arcade to pinball cross conversions. Atari and Bally Midway did a number of Pinball machines based on arcade classics, and the Gaming Your Way team pay homage to that tradition with a conversion of their classic retro shooter of the same name : Law of The West.
8bitrocket's Full Take: This excellent pinball game brings back so many memories. First, it replicates the 70's and 80's tradition of making a pinball table themed with assets from an existing video game (GYW's Law of The West). Plus, the look of the table and the classic 80's layout is a tribute to some of the greatest table designs in the history of the pinny game (both video pinball games of the early 90's and 80's stand-alone tables). On the technical side, it is a rock solid achievement and a model of what can be done with the swf platform and a nice physics engine (Box2D - as painstaking as it must have been to to do in a detailed environment such as a pinball table even with that great physics library).
Blast-a-thon retro evolved Hey Hey Shooter Classic added to the 8bitrocket Retro Showcase
Blast-a-thon retro evolved Hey Hey Shooter Classic added to the 8bitrocket Retro Showcase
Hey Hey Shooter Classic is a fast and furious top-down shooter game reminiscent of Geometry Wars Retro. Be sure to check out the achievements and get to the top of the leader boards! - Developer: Nate Pacyga.
8bitrocket Take: Hey Hey Shooter Classic is a very fun little retro/evolved blaster. Obviously, Geometry Wars is a modern game, but it based on all solid retro principles, and Hey-HeyShooter Classic owes it origins at least in part to it. Nate has put together a very solid package that has atmosphere and playability in spades. Be sure to check out the achievements!

Defuse the bombs in the right order in this 50 level arcade puzzle
game. Don't touch the wrong bomb or take too long, and be careful how
you plan your route - the grid you are walking on doesn't stay around
for ever! The first 15 levels start you off gently, and then you'll
really need to work the grey matter to proceed.

Swarm by deflogic

8bitrocket take: One of the best, if not the best Galaga style games made since the original!
Replicator by deflogic

8bitrocket take: Great combination of Galaxian and Robotron, This is a modern classic that should have been in the arcades in 1981!
Flatland by deflogic

Kablammo! by Jess Hansen

8bitrocket take: Well crafted Avalanche / Kaboom Style game
AdvanSnake by Jess Hansen

8bitrocket take: A very nice remake of the classic snake game with both Modern and Classic modes of play
