Spore Is Midcore!
9/13/2008
Category: Mid-Core Gamer by: Steve Fulton
i know I'm not the first person to mention this (I saw link from another blog that puts the idea of Spore and Midcore in the same sentence), but I just want to reiterate just how much SPORE seems fits the idea of "Midcore".

I'm currently playing Spore on my new iMac and it runs beautifully.   My two older girls and I have been building creatures, buildings and vehicles for the past two days.  The builder alone is worth the price of the software.   In the past two days I have heard my daughter say the following:

8-bit Rocket's Top-10 Midcore/Casual/Retro Game Predictions For The Next 12 Months
9/1/2008
Category: Mid-Core Gamer by: Steve Fulton
since September is just starting and many Midcore/Casual gamers and gamer-parents are gearing up for what is really the new year (new schools and/or classes, new and returning tv shows, NHL,NBA,NFL, world Futbol leagues restarting, etc) we've decided to buck the trends and make this our month to make yearly predictions for the Midcore/Casual/Retro game industry. Some of these are more wishful thinking than others. See if you can spot them. Here you go!

10. Mac gaming will rise to new heights. Publishers will convert PC games to the Mac using next-generation Intel hardware conversion utilities. They will find that testing games for the relatively small number of Mac hardware variations makes their job much easier. IGN will re-launch mac.ign.com. Also, bucking the recent trends, a Mac-gaming-centric print magazine will launch...and the initial issues will sell very well.

9. FMAME (the Flash version of MAME) will be embraced by many unscrupulous game portals. Other Flash-based emulators will follow. Small Flash game developers will have their games squeezed out of portals and will have to work much harder to make games that will get published. At the same time, an I.P. incident similar to the Facebook "Scrabulous" issue will rock the viral, Flash game world. It will force many domestic U.S./Europe portals to screen games more closely, and start licensing classic game ROMs for use on their sites, further squeezing indie game developers.

Where the @#$! Is Pinball Hall Of Fame, Williams Collection?
3/6/2008
Category: Required Playing by: Steve Fulton
i'm a pinball fan. there, I've said. I love playing actual pinball tables, and I love playing simulated pinball on computers and consoles. My wife and I spent the first two years dating in the early 90s playing a Williams machine named Machine Bride Of Pinbot at the local Pizza Hut. I used to rack up high scores for hours using the bonus/nudge trick on the Atari VCS version of Video Pinball. One of my favorite Atari 800 games was Bill Budge's Pinball Construction Set (which just might be the greatest 8-bit game ever made). One of my favorite early 90's PC games was Tristan Pinball. Heck, I even own the Lynx cartridge with the Elivra pinball game on it. A couple years back I bought the the first Pinball Hall Of Fame Gottleib Collection for the PS2 and was very pleased.

Destructoid: The Myth Of Casual Gaming = Midcore?
2/28/2008
Category: Mid-Core Gamer by: Steve Fulton

jim Sterling over at Destructoid has written a very insightful blog about The Myth Of Casual Gaming .  Jim writes:

The truth of the matter is that the hardcore/casual divide is little more than a myth, and the companies that are so desperate to secure themselves a casual demographic are doing little else than chasing rainbows.

Jim seems to be covering some of the same ground that Jeff covered in his original blog about Midcore gamers.

Mid-CoreGamer.com Update, Mid-Core Manifesto 1.3, Mid-Core Gamer Review Format
2/11/2008
Category: Mid-Core Gamer by: Steve Fulton

we have been working feverishly to get our support for the Mid-Core community launched.  We have received tons of feedback, and we have been altering our udeas and plans accordingly.

First off, the initial version of http://www.midcoregamer.com is up.  It is still very basic, but the shell is there, and we wil lcontinue to work on it.

Also version the Midcore Manifesto (version 1.3) is now available in the Wiki.  We have combined two of the items, to round it back to ten.  Alsom we have added some axioms that are more-like guidelines to what it means to be a Mid-Core gamer.

Finally, we have created the 1.0 Spec of the Mid-Core Gamer Game Review Format.  This is our unique style for reviewing games based on the Mid-Core Manifesto.  We hope that this format will help people who consider themselves "Mid-Core" to find games that will appeal to them.

Midcore Gamer: Update, Web site, Wiki, Creative Commons
2/7/2008
Category: Mid-Core Gamer by: Steve Fulton

we've had a flood of interest and feedback over our Midcore Manifesto posted last week. and much of it has been very positive. To be perfectly honest, this has come as a complete surprise. Our web site is dedicated to free tutorials for making Flash games (a very small but fierce demographic). We only blog on topics about "playing games" when we feel the urge to do so.

Mid-Core Gamer Manifesto
1/31/2008
Category: Mid-Core Gamer by: Steve Fulton
a few weeks back, we here at 8bitrocket.com declared ourselves to be Mid-Core Gamers. Jeff's declaration was met with a smattering of agreement from other sites, but it was not an earth shaking response.

Still, it was encouraging, and since we not only believe in the theory of Mid Core Gamers , but also live it every day, we have decided to explore this idea a bit further. First off, we have created a FORUM on our site for Mid-Core Gamers. You can view it here: http://www.8bitrocket.com/forums/Default.aspx?g=topics&f=21 The first question on the forum is "Do Mid-Core Gamers Really Exist." If you have an opinion on this, please feel free to tell us.

Also, we are putting together a Manifesto of the top-10 things that we Mid-Core Gamers would like to see in games targeted to our demographic. This is in no-way final, but it is our best first guess from what we currently know.

1. Save Anywhere:
We only have time to play games in roughly 5-60 minute increments.

To Coin A Phrase?
1/5/2008
Category: Mid-Core Gamer by: Steve Fulton

it looks like Jeff's blog yesterday about being a "Mid-Core" gamer has struck a chord with a few people.  We had one of our best days ever yesterday (traffic-wise) and we got some good placements on sites like Gamesetwatch.com, Destrucoid.com and GoNintendo.com.  Some people even seem to like the new moniker and have taken to using it to describe themselves.  Pretty cool actually.

Will Mid-Core actually live on as an actual coined-phrase?  Maybe, maybe not...
